Non-Standard Details

The following are the non-standard details as fitted by the BMC “Works” department in 1960 to:

Registration No: UJB 143.
Austin Healey 3000 MK1.
Engine No. 29D/NU/7326.
Chassis No. 6685.

- Front grille replaced with wire mesh.
- Two spot lights mounted low down in front of shroud.
- Centrally mounted spotlight above the grille aperture.
- Fiberglass bonnet.
- Alloy front guards with triangular cut-out with cooling fins.
- Chassis rail removed and box section strengthened to allow for 3rd carb.
- ENGINE: Appears identical to SMO 745.

  • Triple 2” SU Carbs.
  • Throttle linkage mounted on steering column.
  • Sump has plate welded to bottom.
  • Motor, painted red and many nuts and bolts drilled and wired.
  • Valves inlet 1-3/4” dia. Exhaust 1-5/8” dia.
  • Flat top pistons which come level with the lop of the block.
  • Crankshaft & conrod assys. balanced.  
  • Sump possibly larger and has baffles.

- Twin coils and relays.
- Works hard top and trap door
- Odometer fitted opposite passenger.
- Map reading light clipped to top of dash.
- Extra rear mirror adhered to windscreen.
- Pad fitted to drivers door to rest knee against.
- Pedals bent for heel and toeing.
- Gear box change lever bent in “S” shape.
- Gear box all straight cut gears. Ratios are same as listed for Tulip box.
- The words “Tulip Rat” punched in Bell Housing.
- Four wheel disc brakes.

  • Front: Standard Girling type.
  • Rear: Dunlop “La Paz” mounted.
  • At 1 o’clock with hand brake.
  • Mechanism at 12 0’clock. Very similar to 100 “S”.
  • Rear brakes except they have 2 bolt hole  mountings
  • VS. 4 on the 100 “S” and the piston housings are forged
  • Not machined as on the 100 “S”.

- Twin fuel pumps.
- Alloy rear guards.
- Alloy boot lid with spot light and lid.
- 25 gallon tank.
- Le Mans petrol filler cap.
- Two seater rear shroud with no bumper iron holes.9
- Clayton power booster for brakes.
- 14 leaf rear springs.
- Side mounted exhaust system.
- Rear discs have 7/16 mounting holes which means they must have been made specifically for Healey. Jaguar are 9/16 and conversions must bush the holes.
- Competition overdrive.
